Falafel

2011

Falafel

Jerusalem
Screening of 3 videos (on a loop)
3 x 1’17’’

In this performance, the artist (centre) reproduces the same gestures as the Palestinian cook (left) and Israeli cook (right) who make falafel.

Falafels are a widespread culinary specialty in the Middle East consisting of chickpea patties fried in oil.

The artist makes falafel with earth from Jerusalem at the Mount of Olives, the Mecca of monotheisms.

In the struggle between Eros (life instinct) symbolized by food and Thanatos (death instinct) as evidenced by the repeated gestures next to the largest Jewish cemetery in the world, the artist criticizes the situation in the Middle East and through his work openly supports Eros at the expense of Thanatos.
