The artistic and social work of the French-Israeli artist Elodie Abergel has been for many years highly relevant to the contextual art movement. Her work has been part of various contemporary art movements for several years: contextual art, feminist art, conceptual art, visual art...
After training at the Beaux-Arts in Nantes, she moved to Jerusalem in 2005 to pursue what she called “Territories of Sharing” (T.D.P.). For nearly 10 years, in parallel with an abundant artistic creation, she was there committed to associations for peace and coexistence between peoples. The central place of identity and the question of territory, of visible or invisible borders is at the heart of her work through which she depicts the Middle Eastern conflict with humor and tenderness and emphasizes “repetition” to underline the absurdity of the Israeli-Palestinian situation.
From 2015 and until today, Elodie has also worked in the United States and France. From Jerusalem to Paris via New York, she develops with her works and her artistic action, an art of the present, offering a humanist, poetic and critical look at contemporary societies: the political situation, the place of women, the migration crisis, the excesses of the consumer society, the dehumanization of work, addictions, the health crisis, etc.
To this end, she uses materials or objects from her environment that she repurposes and different mediums (photography, installation, video, performance, etc.) depending on what she wishes to express. She also collects material, particularly photographic material, in order to compose digital works "by touch".
She defines herself as an activist artist, an “artivist” who “uses territories as open-air workshops and immersion in the heart of society as a source of inspiration in order to develop an art that is also meant to be “participatory”.
* A concept born in 2005, consisting of an art installation where individuals from different religious and cultural associations can interact. Traces of these exchanges are re-transcribed into new forms, creating a new territory, giving rise to the final project. The “Shared Territories” (“Territoires de Partages, T.D.P.”) are what Nicolas Bourriaud calls “relational aesthetics”.
Artist statement / Déclaration d’intention
Le travail de l’artiste franco-israélienne Elodie Abergel s’inscrit depuis plusieurs années dans différents mouvements de l’art contemporain : art contextuel, art féministe, art numériqe, art conceptuel…
Après une formation aux beaux-arts de Nantes, elle s’installe à Jérusalem en 2005 afin de poursuivre ce qu’elle a nommé des « Territoires de Partages » (T.D.P.)* . Pendant près de 10 ans, en parallèle d’une création artistique foisonnante, elle s’engage auprès d’associations pour la paix et la coexistence entre les peuples. La place centrale de l’identité et la question du territoire, des frontières visibles ou non est au cœur de son travail. A travers ses œuvres, elle dépeint avec humour et tendresse le conflit proche-oriental et met l’accent sur « la répétition » pour souligner l’absurdité de la situation israélo-palestinienne.
A partir de 2015 et jusqu’à aujourd’hui, Elodie travaille également aux États Unis et en France. De Jérusalem à Paris en passant par New-York, elle développe avec ses œuvres et ses actions artistiques, un art de l’actuel, offrant un regard humaniste, poétique et critique sur les sociétés contemporaines : la situation politique, la place des femmes, la crise migratoire, les dérives de la société de consommation, la déshumanisation du travail, les addictions, la crise sanitaire...
Pour se faire, elle utilise des matériaux ou objets de son environnement qu’elle détourne et différents médiums (photographie, installation, vidéo, performance…) en fonction de ce qu’elle désire exprimer. Elle récolte également de la matière notamment photographique afin de composer « par touche » des œuvres numériques.
Elle se définit comme une artiste engagée, une « artiviste » qui « utilise le territoire comme un atelier à ciel ouvert et l’immersion au cœur de la société comme source d’inspiration afin de développer un art qui se veut aussi « participatif».
* Territoires de partage (T.D.P) : principe de création né en 2005 qui consiste à mettre en place une installation artistique avec laquelle des personnes de différentes appartenances religieuses et culturelles interagissent. Les traces de ces échanges sont retranscrites plastiquement et engendrent de nouvelles formes, un nouveau territoire, ce qui donne naissance à l’œuvre finale. Les T.D.P. s’inscrivent dans ce que Nicolas Bourriaud nomme « l’esthétique relationnelle ».

Co-onstruction with Deborah Abergel
Déborah Abergel, clinical psychologist specializing in intercultural psychology, has dual training in psychoanalysis and anthropology. She has been practicing her profession in Paris for more than 20 years independently and within various associations helping migrants, young people with social difficulties and with disabilities. At the same time, she has developed a personal artistic practice, writes texts for different artists and contributes to several co-creation projects.
From collaboration to artistic co-construction, the Abergel sisters have developed interactive work between Paris and Jerusalem from 2007 on. The complementary approach they initiated took shape in 2012 through the exhibition “Etat-limite/- Limit State ”.
Some works are born of exchanges between them: from a "visual idea" that Elodie initiates, they develop a common reflection, imagine devices and Elodie realizes the works on the ground, not hesitating to stage herself in performances and videos. Other works are entirely imagined and produced by Elodie.
Déborah also writes all the texts that accompany the works. From conception to presentation, they co-construct together a work imbued with humanism, a committed art.
Co-onstruction avec Deborah Abergel
Déborah Abergel, psychologue clinicienne spécialisée en psychologie interculturelle, possède une double formation en psychanalyse et en anthropologie. Elle exerce sa profession à Paris depuis plus de 20 ans en libéral et au sein de différentes associations d’aides aux migrants, de jeunes en difficultés sociales et en situation de handicap. En parallèle, elle développe une pratique artistique personnelle, rédige des textes pour différents artistes et contribue à plusieurs projets de co-création.
D’une collaboration à la co-construction artistique, les sœurs Abergel ont développé un travail interactif entre Paris et Jérusalem à partir de 2007. La démarche complémentaire qu’elles ont initiée prend forme en 2012 à travers l’exposition « Etat-limite/Limite d’état ».
Certaines œuvres naissent des échanges entre elles : à partir d’une « idée visuelle » qu’Elodie initie, elles développent une réflexion commune, imaginent des dispositifs et Elodie réalise les œuvres sur le terrain, n’hésitant pas à se mettre en scène dans des performances et des vidéos. D’autres œuvres sont entièrement imaginées et réalisées par Elodie.
Déborah rédige également l’ensemble des textes qui accompagnent les œuvres. De la conception à la présentation, elles co-construisent ensemble une œuvre empreinte d’humanisme, un art engagé.
